Later that day, just before lunch, Shorty, Gladys and I were sitting in my office, going through a list of candidates to decide exactly who to take with us to Auderville.

The spectacular bruise that had formed over the left side of my neck, and which also almost covered my jaw, seemed to be the hit of the morning with everyone at work when we eventually walked into the building. I had grimaced at Gladys's 'tsk-tsk' when she saw us arrive.

"What in heaven's name are you doing here after what happened last night?" she'd said, crossly.

"How did you find out what happened last night?"

"How do you think, Thomas?" she asked, casting a quick glance at Shorty.

"My uncle?" he asked, hesitantly.

"He rang to tell me you would both be late and that you'd been pulling bodies out of that awful mess at Covent Garden. He also told me he'd advised you to stay home and rest."

"Did he now?" I asked, a little annoyed to hear Steve's thoughts on what we should do.

Gladys glared at us, seemingly exasperated at what we had done despite the look of admiration that occasionally escaped through her steely gaze.

"Well, we're here now! Can we please get on with it?" I said, braving her disapproval.

"I can only offer you black tea. I suppose you'd like one now you're here?"

"Yes, please, Miss Gleeson, if you would be so kind," Shorty said, his hat in his hands, looking as cute as a button.

She harrumphed, and then smiled at him, before disappearing into the closet off my office to put the kettle on the gas ring.

"I wish I had that knack," I whispered to him. "Her bite is far worse than her bark."

"I heard that!" she yelled from the room. "But, then again, I expect I was meant to," she added, poking her head around the door jamb and growling at me. Shorty, though, got a wink.

Once the tea had been made, and Gladys had summoned one of her 'heavies' to sit at her desk and guard my office door, she said, after closing it behind her, "Now, let's get on with this little tête-à-tête; we need to get the Auderville team chosen and assembled, and then you two need to go home and get some rest."

I kissed her cheek, and then took the cup that she was holding out to me. "Thank you, Gladys," I said.

"Honestly, Tommy… " she began to say, the worry clear in her face.

"We're fine; I promise you. And you can stop looking so cross. We didn't go looking for trouble, you know: we just didn't run away from helping when we came across it."

She sighed, and then sat on the edge of my desk, leaning forward with a cigarette in her hand, so that Shorty could light it for her.

To limit the amount of time that we would need to stay in Occupied France, it was decided that we should take two teams. It would mean four of us in total would have to parachute into Normandy.
